Hips, haws and berries

At long last - welcome, Autumn! My absolute favourite (I may have said that about spring and winter too, but sssh), and to my mind, the season with the most beautiful colours. Blackberry leaves will be turning shocking pink any day now, and already the hedgerows are red, purple and yellow.

Hence the autumnal updates on the Secret Garden page - there are also new pieces on the Commissions, Precious Earth and World on a String pages too.

Plus the FOOD! Summer's all very well, but it doesn't have enough crumble for me, frankly. I'm very lucky to have a mother and a stepmother who make fabulous jams and chutneys, so this is the time of year when I present them with empty jam jars and a hopeful, hungry look.

Plus the DRINK! This year I'll be steeping elderberries (top right) in white port, to make the main component of my Elder Wand cocktail. There will also be rosehip and hawthorn schnapps for the Hawcrux. Autummmmmmmn.

Rose petal pearls

I've just discovered these keshi pearls, and I do declare they are the loveliest things I've seen in a while. And this from a woman with a wild rabbit AND a puppy on her lawn. You can see more (of the pearls, not the puppy) in the 'Secret Garden' section on the right.

Sea glass

Sea glass may just be my favourite material to work with. The more it's been knocked about, the more beautiful it is. If that reminds you of anyone you know, and you'd like to buy a piece as a gift, take a look at the 'Sea foam and bubbles' range on the right.

Sea green and serene

The weather hasn't been very serene lately, but I'm still dreaming of days on a fishing boat. Sigh.

Find of the day

I found these on the path today. Aren't they lovely? Blackbird, I suppose - maybe there was a fight, probably about whose beak is the buttercuppiest yellow.

At the moment, walking for more than five minutes is a strain, so I'm working hard to squeeze every last drop from each outing. My neighbours have a honeysuckle in full bloom (mine is still only budding), and the roses around the arch are wonderfully fragrant. As are the cows in the field behind the house.

Seduced by imperfection

I like things that are irregular, imperfect and weathered. I love scars, freckles, wrinkles, stretch marks and grey hair. Which is just as well, as I've been acquiring those over the years! I love things, and people, with stories to tell - trees twisted by the wind; pebbles worn smooth by the sea; twigs and moss curved into a nest by the pressure of a nesting bird's breast.

When I first started making jewellery, I was living in London. Now I've moved home to Devon, and it's starting to show in the pieces I'm producing and the materials I'm choosing. Sea glass, semi-precious stones and textured wood reflect my surroundings, and I'm sure there'll be more blogging about that as time goes on.

This blog is intended to serve as a showcase for my work, and as an invitation to look closely at the hidden beauty around you - chances are it isn't symmetrical, doesn't have straight lines and wasn't designed by anyone wearing a suit. These are the little low heavens that make me feel fully at home on earth. I hope you'll join me in looking for them and loving them.
